Labour and the Liberal Democrats plan to power share in Wirral.

PRESS RELEASE

Comments on the Labour and the Liberal Democrats decision to power share in Wirral.

Conservative Group Leader Jeff Green said: “This is the most hypocritical decision imaginable. In the run up to polling day the Lib Dem Leader urged Tory voters to switch to Lib Dem in order to stop Labour. Then at the first chance he slides into bed with Labour. How many seats would the Liberal Democrats have held if they had been honest before May 3rd about their intention to do a deal with Labour?”

The May 3rd poll once again produced a hung council with Labour down one on 25 seats. The Lib Dems stay the same at 19 because of a resignation. The Conservatives remain at 21. In terms of the popular vote the Tories won 38% a full ten points ahead of Labour and 13 ahead of the Lib Dems.

“The backroom deal of the Lib Dems and Labour is strange to say the least. Back in 2005 a Wirral Labour MP told me the Lib Dems were friends of yobs and their election leaflets ‘hypocritical’. The Wirral Labour leader at the recent Budget Council called the Liberal Democrats a ‘sad joke of a party’.”

“This deal comes as no shock to us as Labour cut after Labour cut to the Social Services budget was passed because the Lib Dems sided with Labour and not the Conservatives.”

“We proposed a shared cabinet that reflected the electorate’s wishes. However, the Labour party needed an unquestioning partner as it prepares to slash another £30 to 48million of services,” concluded Councillor Green.

In response to the news in this morning's papers that Labour and the Liberal Democrats plan to form an alliance to govern Wirral, Dick Calver Chairman of Wirral West Conservatives states:

" Wirral electorate have been deceived.

Residents of Wirral West already believe that they do not get a fair share of their Council Tax spent in their area.

The power grab by Labour and the Lib/Dems can only be bad news for the west side of Wirral.

Never has it been more true; Vote Lib Dem and get Labour.

At a time when the next leader of the Labour Party is crushing all opposition this is a wake up call to the residents of Wirral. "
