The biggest risk for Britain is five more years of Gordon Brown
Date: Wednesday 10th March 2010

William Hague, the Shadow Foreign Secretary, has argued that the biggest risk for Britain is five more years of Gordon Brown.

Speaking to the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies, he said that "our ability to undertake economic modernisation will be critical to Britain’s future influence".

"When capital, labour and technology are increasingly mobile we cannot stand still", he said. "That is why James Dyson’s report about how we can give more weight to science and technology in our economy is so welcome".

"That is why our proposals on business taxation are oriented towards attracting and maintaining investment, why our programme of education reform explicitly draws from best practice across the globe, from Alberta to Sweden to Singapore, to ensure we make the most of every young person’s talent in the future."

Hague warned that the modernisation our economy needs is not guaranteed. "If our opponents’ mistaken arguments and mistaken principles prevailed Britain will move backwards towards a ’70s style model, with a bigger say for the trade unions who want to impose rigidity and unaffordable regulation across the public and private sector. The bridge will be drawn up against innovation and investment."

He also warned that Labour is no longer "the outward-looking thinking of the late 1990s", but that it's taking "an explicitly old-fashioned Left approach" - particularly in selecting candidates who are "hardened union activists with a track record in resisting modernisation".

Hague said Gordon Brown was right to refer to the economy being "at a crossroads" in a speech he gave today. "We could continue with five more years of his debt, waste and taxes. We know where that would lead - just yesterday an international credit rating agency warned that Labour's plans would result in the loss of our credit rating. "

"That would be a catastrophe for our economy and for our reputation around the world", he said.

"So the biggest risk for Britain is five more years of Gordon Brown. The alternative is to change direction, deal with our debts more quickly and restore confidence in our economy. A new Conservative Government will be a chance to send the signal far and wide that Britain is once again open for business."

Fiscal responsibility is morally, economically and politically right
Date: Thursday 26th March 2009

David Cameron has stressed that fiscal responsibility is "an essential step" on the road to recovery from the recession.

He said that Gordon Brown was "isolated" after the Governor of the Bank of England, the CBI, the German Government, the European Central Bank and independent forecasters all warned that Britain can't afford a further discretionary fiscal stimulus because of the disastrous state of the public finances.

In an article in the Telegraph, David said that fiscal responsibility is at the heart of what the Conservatives are offering the country - and stressed:

"The only way to restore confidence in our public finances and our economy - at home and abroad - is to set out a credible strategy for living within our means."

He said fiscal responsibility is morally, economically and politically right: morally, because it's wrong to burden future generations with our debts; economically, because the scale of Labour's Debt Crisis means another fiscal stimulus would make things worse; and politically, because it's a vital part of the Conservative belief in personal and social responsibility.

He stressed, "What the country needs right now is straight talk and a strong lead. Straight talk on the debt crisis, because we've got to start solving it in order to get our economy out of recession and into recovery. And a strong lead on the economy, because everyone's going to have to take their fair share of the burden for putting right what Labour have got wrong."

The Fight Goes On!
Date: Tuesday 17th February 2009

After the disgraceful vote and decision to close our libraries and facilities I have been inundated with calls, emails and letters from devastated residents - My message is quite clear - The fight continues - we will work together to try to rectify the wrong that has been done to the people of Wirral.

The Secretary of State  Andy Burnham has it within his power to call this decision in and we must press him to do just that. Through Ed Vaizey Shadow Minister for Libraries I have written to him and I’d implore everyone to do the same.

The Good People of Wirral need to stick together and make those in charge listen.

In some areas more people voted to save the local libraries than voted in the local elections.

So elected representatives who voted for these closures must think again.  The people of Wirral have told you and are still telling you quite simply they want local facilities, in local areas, for the local residents.

To continue the Fight to save our Libraries - email me or call me and together let’s see what we can do to reverse these ridiculous cuts.

The Cuts Across Wirral
Date: Thursday 22nd January 2009

To see the Cabinet Decision and full list of closures  click here

Thursday night  was a terrible night for Wirral with the announcement of 11 libraries closing and countless community facilities facing the axe.

For Wirral West,  it was a  mixed night,  the Woodchurch Leisure Centre is to remain open which is terrific news (although the community centre is facing an uncertain future) as will Pensby library and Upton Library … at least for now….. whereas Hoylake Library, Irby Library and Woodchurch library are all set to close - disastrous for those local areas.

Rest assured for me the Fight continues to Save Our Local Facilities, in fact straight after the announcement I went out with colleagues and various members of community groups to discuss the best way forward and to put a strategy together to fight these closures.

I want to make the Conservative Party Position on Wirral quite clear on this matter, we believe in local facilities for local communities, so we will reopen whatever this Labour /Liberal Council close.

I have already been down to Parliament working with Jeremy Hunt MP, shadow minister for Culture and Ed Vaizey MP, spokesman for art and culture,  who have submitted an Early Day Motion regarding the disgraceful closure of libraries on Wirral.

This House condemns the proposal put forward by the Liberal Democrat/LAbour co-alition on Wirral Borough Council to close thirteen libraries across the borough, as well as the Wirral Transport Museum and the Pacific Road Arts Centre; notes that two of the libraries ear-marked for closure serve two of the most disadvantaged communities in the UK; further notes that Birkenhead Central Library, a purpose built library dating back to the Thirties was recently renovated at considerable cost and that 70 library posts are under threat; agrees with Alan Gibbons from the Campaign for the Book that this is “cost-driven vandalism”; and with the leader of the Conservative Group on Wirral Borough Council Jeff Green that the proposals are “disgraceful”; and with the readers of Wirral News, 92 per cent of whom have voted on-line to say that the Council’s actions do not represent their views; and urges the Liberal Democrat and Labour councillors to think again about their proposals”.

Save Our Services: The Fight Continues
Date: Monday 5th January 2009

Liverpool Daily Post

WIRRAL council leaders have been branded undemocratic after “excluding” Conservative members from public meetings over plans to axe libraries.

West Wirral Conservative Parliamentary candidate Esther McVey also claimed the plan to hold four meetings serving 11 different areas on the borough will make it difficult for people to attend a meeting.

The local authority has said it faces mounting bills for a backlog of repairs on libraries, leisure centres and museums and has vowed to make “tough decisions”.

The proposals are for at least a dozen libraries to be closed, including Birkenhead Central Library’s historic building, and its functions moved to a new centre at the Europa Pools site.

Also under threat are Pacific Road Theatre, along with the Transport Museum there and Wirral library at Birkenhead Town Hall, and among the leisure centres facing closure are Woodchurch, Guinea Gap and Grange Road West.

But Ms McVey believes meetings to discuss the plans with the public should be chaired by local councillors and not by the council leader, and the current arrangement is undemocratic, she argues.

Last night, she told the Daily Post: “The council is now trying to exclude Conservative councillors in Conservative areas from hosting or being a part of the forums other than being there as members of the audience – this is an absolute outrage and possibly against the constitution.”

She highlights article 10.2 in the council’s own constitution, passed just last month, that states these meetings should be made up of “Ward councillors of the respective wards.”

However, deputy council leader Lib Dem Simon Holbrook has dismissed the idea that the council is being undemocratic.

He said: “First of all, Esther McVey is not a councillor and will have the same right as any other member of the public to express her views.

“Secondly, these are consultative meetings and not formal meetings of the area forums, so there is not a constitution issue here.

“I think what Steve Foulkes is trying to do here is to show leadership and he will be there, as I will, to listen and hear what people have to say. There’s nothing untoward in that.

“We’re not far from making a final decision but we do need to make sure that everyone has had time to express their views.

“Also, if anyone is not able to get to their area meeting, they are free to go along to any of the four meetings and raise their point.”

But Jeff Green, leader of the Conservative group, however called the entire exercise “outrageous”.

He said: “This decision was taken late in December and the consultation period arranged over Christmas.”

Labour plan to close; Libraries, theatres, museums & leisure centres right across Wirral
Date: Tuesday 2nd December 2008

Facing closure is Hoylake Library, Pensby Library, Irby Library and Upton library as well as the Woodchurch Leisure Centre. This would be disastrous for the people of Wirral West. These closures are unthinkable and for many unacceptable.

Earlier on in the year Esther heard rumours about the possibility of Hoylake library and Upton library closing and when she and her fellow Conservative Councillors, raised their concerns  they were told they were ’scaremongering’ and that ‘they had theur facts wrong’ - well we were far from wrong and now we will have to fight  to try to prevent these closures happening.

However Gordon wraps it up, it's still a tax bombshell
Date: Tuesday 25th November 2008

George Osborne said the Pre-Budget Report represents “the greatest failure of public policy for a generation” after Alistair Darling announced plans to double the national debt to more than £1 trillion.

George, the Shadow Chancellor, described the report as a "Tax Bombshell Budget" and stressed that a debt of £1 trillion was “the bill for Labour’s decade of irresponsibility”.

“It is confirmation of the time-old truth that, in the end, all Labour chancellors run out of money and all Labour governments bring this country to the verge of bankruptcy.”

George condemned Darling’s strategy of trying to spend money we don’t have to try to escape the recession:

“Like the gambler who can’t give up, he thinks they can borrow their way out of debt.”

George stressed that the lowering of VAT and raising of the top income tax band were measures “designed to distract attention” from the massive permanent tax rises in the Pre-Budget Report:

  • £20 billion on National Insurance
  • £10 billion on income tax
  • £5 billion on alcohol and cigarettes
  • £2 billion on pensions

These increases amount to nearly £1,500 for every family over the next Parliament - and by 2012/13, anyone earning more than £20,000 will be paying more tax.

George condemned Labour for putting an “unexploded tax bombshell" underneath the future economic recovery, and stressed that Labour's temporary tax cuts will lead to higher taxes in the long run:

"Labour has done it again. Massive borrowing. Rising unemployment.  Tax giveaways for Christmas paid for by tax rises for life. This Budget is all about the political cycle and not the economic cycle."

Irby Residents ready to fight landfill
Date: Tuesday 11th November 2008

As a meeting was held in the council the residents of Irby came out in force to protest against the potential landfill development of Irby Quarry. Many local residents, some with the quarry at the end of their garden, attended the meeting to express their disgust and anguish that the quarry was even being cited as a potential site.

Irby Quarry is a designated site of “Biological Interest” and is used by walkers, rock climbers, dog walkers, even theatrical groups. It is a huge community amenity and of significance to Wirral’s rich history. Esther McVey, Parliamentary Candidate for Wirral West, who co chaired the meeting, said “Serious questions need to be asked about the validity of any claim that Irby Quarry is a suitable site for a landfill. We heard from residents who had lived in Irby for over 70 years about the history of the Quarry and residents all over who wanted to protect, not only its beauty but the local area from the disruption and traffic congestion this type of venture could bring.”

Wendy Clements, Local Campaigner added, “We have a petition of over 200 names already, the strength of feeling in our small village should not be overlooked – residents are ready to fight this all the way.”

Labour's incapacity benefit plans "not up to the job"
Date: Tuesday 28th October 2008

Chris Grayling, Shadow Minister for Liverpool and Merseyside  has warned that the Government’s new Employment and Support Allowance will not tackle the key issues around incapacity benefit.

The Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary said, “The problem with this change is that the Government’s programs to help people on incapacity benefit are still just not up to the job.”

And he stressed, “Only a tiny fraction of the 2.6 million people claiming incapacity benefit are currently getting any kind of back to work support. The launch of this new allowance isn’t going to change that.”

A Landfill site at Irby Quarry?
Date: Sunday 19th October 2008

Irby Quarry has been earmarked as a potential new landfill site in plans this week.
It has been identified in a report by the Merseyside Environmental Advisory Service (MEAS)
that has been discussed by Wirral Council's cabinet.
Esther McVey, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Wirral West and Wendy Clements,
local candidate for Greasby, Irby and Frankby have both dismissed the plans as "ridiculous"
insisting that consultation with local residents is vital.
"The access roads to the site are not suitable for this kind of development" said Esther, adding "the disruption to local residents would be huge."
Wendy Clements commented "this is a local amenity for residents and school children
who enjoy rock climbing and abseiling, and can not be turned into a landfill site."

Fox slams Government's loss of military personnel data
Date: Sunday 12th October 2008

Liam Fox has attacked the Government’s “reckless approach” to military personnel data after a hard drive containing the details of around 100,000 Armed Forces members went missing.

The Shadow Secretary of State for Defence said, “The MoD has a very poor record on keeping sensitive and classified data secure. This latest scandal is yet another example of poor operational security within the department.”

Liam stressed that “for very obvious personal and national security reasons” the MoD must handle the records of Armed Forces personnel with the utmost care.

And he said, “Once again, the loss of so much confidential information shows the reckless approach this Government takes with our personal information.”

Bank of England should get powers to manage debt
Date: Tuesday 7th October 2008

George Osborne has called on Alistair Darling to consider giving the Bank of England new powers to manage overall debt levels in the economy.

The Shadow Chancellor stressed that we must now start driving forward longer-term changes to our system of regulation to prevent further crises from occurring:

“There will be plenty of time to assess the mistakes that have been made, and how we got into this situation, but one thing is clear: we must ensure that in future that it is banks and their shareholders who put aside capital not the taxpayer.”

George reiterated our support for the bail-out package announced by the Government, but said that it will only be a success when “credit starts flowing through the veins of the economy” again, with banks lending to small businesses and families, not just to each other:

“Let us be clear - we do this not to rescue the banks or the bankers but to rescue the economy and the millions of families who depend on it.”

George repeated David Cameron’s statement that there should be “no rewards for failure”, with no bonuses for those senior executives who “took their banks to the edge of bankruptcy”.

And he asked the Chancellor whether the Government had received a commitment that those banks that are most in need of taxpayer money will not pay bonuses to their senior staff this year.

Esther at Conference
Date: Monday 6th October 2008

 Esther at Conference

It was a ‘good, optimistic party conference’ to quote David Cameron, but the mood was ’sombre’, reflecting the financial crisis we’re all facing. Approx 15,000 people attended the party conference from an array of backgrounds; business, education, political, media - the buzz of new ideas and the energy of the Conservative Party was palpable, but as DC said  in his main speech, the mood of the country, and that of the conference, was subdued as we all ponder the economy and future state of world finances.

It was a busy few days for me as I met with fellow candidates from right across the country, the only time we really all get to meet one another, I met with business associates, charity representatives and key organisations. I had a meeting with William Hague and interviewed George Osborne for Granada TV. I met with Theresa May too, shadow minister for women, primarily to talk about women in the party and how to increase the number of female MP’s in the House. It’s interesting to note that the first female MP was a Conservative, Lady Astor, the first female PM was a Conservative, Margaret Thatcher and the first female Chair of a Party was a Conservative, Theresa May. Surely that goes some way to prove that the Conservative Party truly is a party based on equality and meritocracy - and although our opponents might say opposite, the facts stand for themselves - other parties lag some way behind on promoting women to the top job!

I came home from the Conference buoyant and optimistic that our party really is the party with the ideas, the courage and the competence to run the country and get the econony back on its feet again.

Wirral West Conservatives smash Labour in its heartland!
Date: Thursday 2nd October 2008

Wirral West Conservatives took over 50% of the vote in the local council elections held on 1st May.

Upton: After much hard work, Tom Anderson and the local action team won Upton Ward. Congratulations go to Tom who really deserved to win against this faltering Labour government and their local Lib Dem- Labour councillor supporters. Tom has shown that he cares about Upton and is determined to improve its neglected areas and ensure that council tax payers money is spent in the right places.

Greasby Frankby & Irby: Living in the centre of the ward, hard working candidate, Wendy Clements gave the sitting Lib Dem cabinet member and Labour supporter, Gill Gardiner, a serious shock by reducing her majority from a high 676 to a marginal 75. Congratulations go to Wendy on increasing the Conservative vote from 34% to 43%.

Pensby, Thingwall & Barnston: A hard fought campaign resulted in John Meyer reducing the Lib Dem majority by almost a hundred votes. John and his Conservative action team have worked hard to show how inadequate the LibLab Wirral Council is.

Hoylake & Meols: We congratulate long serving Conservative Councillor John Hale on his re-election with a very healthy majority of 2086

West Kirby & Thurstaston: Cllr Geoffrey Watt was also re-elected taking over 64% of the vote in the ward.

Wirral West is on a roll; why not join us and help get this incompetent, dithering Labour government out……….Time for a Change!
