Saving our Maritime Heritage.

Why is it that whenever I open a local newspaper I read that one more icon and precious example of our rich maritime heritage and Merseyside's unique connection with this Country's naval history is about to be abandoned and shunted off to benefit in the case of the Bar Light Ship, the much more appreciative citizens of Salford.

Many other examples spring to mind including the historic warships at the West Float Birkenhead, who have an uncertain home.

Now we hear rumors that the Tidal Institute Buildings at Bidston Observatory may be sold off for housing?

We refused an opportunity to host the Royal Yacht 'Britannia'. That vessel now occupies a prime site in the docks near Edinburgh and is a highly successful tourist attraction. Have we gone completely soft?

All the time our local Council boasts about its efforts to foster our unique heritage in the Wirral and encourage tourism and then lets these historic jewels disappear.

Its all very well to argue that the responsibility lies with private enterprise. The politicians need to stand up and be counted. We have four Members of Parliament. Would it not be greatly encouraging if they got together and did something positive to discourage this unwelcome depreciation of our assets?
